Can a Chiropractor Help with Chronic Back Pain?

Can a Chiropractor Help with Chronic Back Pain?

There are so many chronic back pain causes that it can be difficult to diagnose and treat. However, no matter your diagnosis, chronic back pain relief comes down to the same principles.

There are many chronic back pain causes, including:

  • Old injury/scar tissue

  • Muscle spasm

  • Imbalance

  • Improper biomechanics

  • Poor posture

  • Repetitive movements

  • Herniated disc

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Joint dysfunction

  • Spinal Stenosis

  • Spondylolisthesis

You can see why I can’t go into detail into each of these chronic back pain cuses.

We could do an MRI to see all of what’s going on inside of you. But even then, it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Is a herniated disc the cause of your chronic back pain, or are you one of the 40% of the adult population that has an asymptomatic disc herniation?

Sometimes findings and diagnoses can be distracting, or even worse, misleading. The scar tissue that you see on imaging, or the canal narrowing may very well be the source of your pain, or it may be an incidental finding.

Why Your Chronic Back Pain Diagnosis Doesn’t Matter

I have something unorthodox to tell you: I don’t really care about the diagnosis of your chronic back pain.

Okay, I do care about some. I want to know if you have any instabilities, pathologies or malignancies.

But beyond that, when you come to me for chronic back pain relief, I’m more interested in what’s going on in your life right now.

  • How do you spend the bulk of your time?

  • How are you sitting?

  • What instrument do you play?

  • What sports do you play?

  • How stressed are you?

  • What hobbies do you get lost in for hours at a time?

  • How is your core strength?

  • Which muscles are tight and shortened on you?

But what if it really IS a disc herniation or spinal stenosis? What can you do then?

That’s the other part. Even if it is, your approach to treating chronic back pain is most likely going to be the same.

Here’s why: I’m not going to get your dried out discs to turn back into the jelly donuts they were when you were a kid, or the nasty arthritic growths on your bones to resorb. The only way to do that is with surgery, and even that has dubious results.

So, even if you have a heinous diagnosis, there’s a good chance that we’re going to ignore it anyway.

Because what we can do is address all the other things that ALSO hurt, and are exacerbating your chronic back pain.

Give Yourself a Chance for Chronic Back Pain Relief

Have you given yourself a fighting chance for chronic back pain relief by strengthening your core?

The entire upper body balances on your lumbar vertebra like a top-heavy Jack in the box. The only chance you have at support is the musculature you develop along the way.

Our bodies are strong and resourceful. They will work for us to the point of failure.

Which is really lovely in times of stress and demand. But when it’s your desk job creeping up on you, day after day, working to the point of failure means tolerating your horrible posture until you go into back spasms for seemingly no reason.

So, what you really came here for, was chronic back pain relief.

When you are looking for chronic back pain treatments, I want you to remember the word “chronic”. That’s the key to understanding and to treating your chronic back pain.

Your pain has been around a long time. Most likely, the thing that caused the pain has also been around a while (jobs, hobbies, posture, etc). And the thing that’s going to get you out of pain isn’t a quick, one-time answer either. All of these things take time.

Steps to Chronic Back Pain Relief

  • Identify and improve postural issues.

  • Be meticulous about how you lift.

  • Sit and sleep properly.

  • Strengthen your core.

  • Move your body frequently and well.

  • Stay aligned with regular chiropractic adjustments so that your body is efficient, and you aren’t creating more imbalanced problems.

I realize that this answer isn’t totally satisfying. But in 20 years of practice as a chiropractor in South Jordan, Utah, I’ve never seen the “quick fix” yet.

The good news is that the list above almost always works to decrease pain for good. More good news is that you’ve just found a great therapist and coach in your Daybreak chiropractor!

The Bottom Line on Chronic Back Pain

Your diagnosis may not be your source of pain.

Even if it is, and it’s incurable, there are still other pain sources that can be dealt with and improved.

I hate to break it to you, there’s no silver bullet.

You and I make a great team!
